Battle Royale is a Japanese film from 2000. Basically every year a class from a Japanese high school is taken to an isolated island and forced to kill each other, the last survivor winning their freedom. It's pretty over-the-top gruesome while making a whole bunch of pretty smart remarks about the pain and fear of growing up.
