Book Review: "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins

Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Scholastic Press; First Edition edition (September 14, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0439023483
ISBN-13: 978-0439023481

Book Summary:
Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with every one out to make sure you don't live to see morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capital surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capital is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

My Review:
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a book that is nearly impossible to put down. Katniss is a determined heroine who steps forward to protect her sister from dying in the hunger games. The narration style keeps you in Katniss' shoes at every turn and keeps you wondering how she'll manage to survive. The Games may give readers a new light on reality TV shows and wonder if Panem is indeed the future of North America since it is so believable. It makes one wonder though what has happened to the other countries. Could they still be out there or is Panem the only country left? The trilogy gives little premise that it will answer this question, but it does still give a very intriguing story that is addicting.

Collins cliffhanger ending will no doubt leave readers desperate to pick up Catching Fire to see what dangers Katniss has to face next.

Rating: 5/5 stars for engaging plot, captivating characters, and page-turning action.

Book Review: "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss

Book cover for The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Contains man in cloak walking towards tree in distance.Paperback: 722 pages
Publisher: DAW (March 27, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-13: 978-0756404079

Back Cover Synopsis:

'I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.'

So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature - the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

My Review )

Overall: 4.5/5

(Note: I will be rereading the story and reviewing it immediately after because I admit that the story's flaws and pros are currently a little hazy to me since I waited so long to review it.)

Book Review: "The Heartsong of Charging Elk"

Synopsis from back cover:
Praised by writers including Sherman Alexie, Leslie Marmon Silko, Annie Dillard, and Kent Haruf, The Heartsong of Charging Elk will stand alongside James Welch's award-winning Fools Crow as a classic of Native American literature.

Richly imagined from historical fact, this is a novel of cultural crossing, as Charging Elk, an Oglala Sioux, joins Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, journeying from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the back streets of ninteenth-century France. Left behind in Marsielle while the the show travels on, Charging Elk is forced to remake his life alone in a strange land. He adapts as well as he can, holding on to the memories and tradition of life on the Plains and eventually falling in love. But none of the worlds the Indian has known can prepare him for the betrayal that follows. At once epic and intimate, The Heartsong of Charging Elk is a triumph of storytelling and the historical imagination that echoes across time, geography, and cultures.

Genre: Fiction

Read Review? (Spoiler Alert) )

Rating: Overall, it ends up with 2/5 stars. I truly believe James Welch could have done a better job with this, especially since it starts off well. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, he lost it.
